ICYMI: Fashion trends from the 1970s are back in full swing — including where swimwear is concerned. In fact, one of the season's hottest bathing suit trends is a major nod to Jane Birkin's breezy beach looks from the decade of disco. Celebrities and the fashion set are gravitating toward teeny bikinis in bold colors with cool, crochet details and we're intrigued. So to find out how to pull off the '70s-inspired swimsuit (and persona), we turned to celebrity stylist Karla Welch for her best tips and product recommendations.

While knits have traditionally been associated with cooler weather, they're now being embraced during summertime. From crochet sets to bikinis, we can't keep our hands off of the '70s-inspired trend — and neither can celebs.
Looking for some recommendations? We love Alo x Tropic of C Crochet Bandeau ($150) and the Kiini Tasmin Bikini Top ($170) and Bottom ($125).
Rather than cringe when you can't find the bottom to your bikini top, get creative. "On the beach, you have the freedom to do whatever you want with your look," says Welch. "You could go crazy and mix patterns with swim separates, or get a really fun sarong to pair with your suit."

One way to let your '70s suit take center stage — even when you venture away from the shore — is to choose something gauzy and sheer so that your bikini peeks through. "I love a white, gauzy peasant blouse as a cover-up," says Welch. "Just make sure it's one you don't mind getting wet!"

"A big floppy hat is so seventies, especially a woven style," says Welch. "Then you’re getting your sun protection as well." When it comes to sandals, she recommends strappy gladiator flats, like Ofis ($315) by Ancient Greek Sandals.

"If you’re going for that full-on '70s vibe, go for an oversized brown or black frame to complement the glamour of the suit," Welch suggests. "But if you prefer a John Lennon-style graded frame, that works too," she adds. Consider Le Specs Jealous Games Sunglasses ($79) and Oliver Peoples Eyewear M-4 30TH Sunglasses ($524), respectively.
